Creating a modern grid for rotation & remixing 

The Edgar Wind Society was established by students of the University of Oxford to make art history accessible to a broader audience. Their quarterly publication, the Edgar Wind Journal, was designed to unify the arts community around short format articles and exhibition reviews by local art historians, curators, and students.

The articles range in period and topic from commentary on commercial fashion photography’s appropriation of indigenous aesthetics to a review of London’s Victoria Albert exhibit on Post Modernism, the use of Icons in Baroque murals. or the use of montage in political propaganda.

To unify the aesthetically different imagery of each article, and in keeping with the theme of ‘Remix’, the rotated titles and rhythmic placement of the images as one flips through, creates an overall system instead of responding or designing for each article’s content.

Each article then fits into a larger system of thinking about the commonalities between the role of art in different genres, time periods and geographies, rather than emphasizing the article’s topical differences. All topics, styles and perspectives are ‘in the mix.’

Designed to be read over coffee or in transit, as a break from more dense academic articles or overflowing listerserves, the grid and margins emphasize white space as an invitation to flip through, skim and breathe.

The use of white space and a blocky, modern grid, also functions to signal the Edgar Wind as a vessel of contemporary art perspectives , rather than as a dusty, heavy relic.
